Backstage at the Festival Interceltique

Summer is the season for big music festivals in France and they don’t come any bigger than the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, Brittany, approaching it’s 50th edition and attracting three quarters of a million Celtic music enthusiasts over ten days at the beginning of every August. This year Wales was the country of honour and the Manic Street Preachers were the headline band on the closing night.

I had the pleasure of attending for the first time a few weeks ago on a commission for Blackmagic Design, one of the world’s leading innovators and manufacturers of creative video technology. My role was to document Kaouenn productions and how they delivered the entire live production which included content for broadcast by France 3 (the regional television network) and Bretagne’s social media network.

It was a fairly challenging experience as the lighting conditions were not ideal (the concerts started at nighttime) and negotiating one’s way through a throng of dancing, drink-merry revellers could be tricky. However, the professionalism and assistance of the crew (despite the pressures of being live), enabled me to get the full range of shots required.

Although I confess to not being a real fan of Celtic music, the good-natured atmosphere and strong cultural identity associated with the festival, definitely left a positive impression.
Thanks again to Simon, Youenn and all the team on that warm and energetic Saturday night, hope to hook up again sometime soon.
